Gitpod Flex in Early Access: FAQs for Gitpod Enterprise and Gitpod Classic customers

Gitpod Flex in Early Access: FAQs for Gitpod Enterprise and Gitpod Classic customers

Today, we launched Gitpod Flex in early access as the first automation platform for zero-trust development environments. For existing Gitpod customers (Gitpod Enterprise or Gitpod Classic), below are some frequently asked questions related to the announcements.

First, a helpful note:

Before October 1, 2024, there were two paid offerings available for Gitpod: Gitpod Enterprise and Gitpod Classic (pay-as-you-go).

Gitpod Enterprise is our premier enterprise offering and remains unchanged. Gitpod Flex functionality will be made available for Gitpod Enterprise customers in early 2025.

Gitpod Classic is our self-serve pay-as-you-go offering. It remains accessible and will be superseded by Gitpod Flex in April 2025. We’ll communicate additional information related to this change to existing users prior to that time. You can still access your account as usual. Continue reading for information on Gitpod Flex and your hosting options post-April 2025.

I’m a Gitpod Classic user, what do I do?

Current Gitpod Classic users do not need to take any action. Gitpod Classic is the name of our previous pay-as-you-go plan. It will remain unchanged until April 2025. Gitpod Flex will replace Gitpod Classic in April 2025. There are currently no actions required of any Gitpod Classic users. If you have any additional questions, don’t hesitate to contact support@gitpod.io.

Gitpod Classic users will have also received an email describing Gitpod Flex in more detail. We’d love for you to try the new product, sign up for free here!

I’m a Gitpod Classic pay-as-you-go customer, what happens to my current plan?

All current pay-as-you-go, Gitpod Classic plans will stay in effect. Starting April 2025, Gitpod Flex will supersede Gitpod Classic. We will send out further communications with any required steps prior to this date.

I’m a Gitpod Enterprise user, what do I do?

Current Gitpod Enterprise users do not need to take any action. Gitpod Enterprise is our premier offering. Gitpod Flex features will be available in Gitpod Enterprise starting early 2025.  If you’d like a demo of Gitpod Flex, don’t hesitate to reach out to your dedicated account manager for help, or self-serve the product for free in early access.

How much does Gitpod Flex cost?

Gitpod Flex is available in early access for free until November 1, 2024. To learn more about pricing, contact us directly.

To use Gitpod for free, leverage our free tier.

Can I use Gitpod for personal use?

Yes! The Free tier is the best way to use Gitpod for personal use. You can run environments locally with Gitpod Desktop, or self-host a runner in your cloud account (this only takes 3 minutes!).

Is anything changing with Gitpod’s Free tier?

Existing free tier users will be able to continue to use their accounts on Gitpod Classic unchanged until April 2025. In April 2025, Gitpod will no longer host 50 hours of free compute a month, rather users will be able to use Gitpod for free with unlimited hours when run through Gitpod Desktop, or can self-host for Gitpod in their cloud account.

The fixed cost for self-hosting Gitpod is approximately $8 per month—low enough to be covered by the AWS free tier. Variable costs scale with usage and depend on how many environments are created, the duration the environments are running and the workspace class chosen.

For example: an engineer using Gitpod for 35 hours per week with a standard environment class of 4 cores and 8GB RAM incurs $0.16 per hour, and approximately $5.60 per week.

Is Gitpod still self-hosted?

Yes! All Gitpod offerings are self-hosted including Gitpod Enterprise, Gitpod Flex and our Free tier. Our self-hosted runner architecture for Gitpod Flex is incredibly simple and can be set up in as little as 3 minutes. See this demo.

I’m a Gitpod Enterprise or Gitpod Classic user, do I need to migrate to use the Development Container specification? What happens to the .gitpod.yml format?

Before April 2025, current Gitpod users do not need to make any changes to their setup. Gitpod Classic will continue to use the .gitpod.yml format only. Gitpod Flex now introduces devcontainer support and will not support .gitpod.yml.

Will Gitpod Flex support GitLab and BitBucket?

Yes. Both GitLab and BitBucket integrations are planned.

Will Gitpod Flex support Azure, GCP, VPS, Linux?

Subject to demand.

Will Gitpod Flex support: Windows/Linux for Gitpod Desktop?

Subject to demand.
